It is estimated that 20% of all American women and girls have been sexually assaulted. That 1 in 5 statistic is astonishing, yet it never seems to change because the reasons for it are so deeply embedded in our culture. It is a fact of life for every woman, whether they have been directly affected or not.
In ‘Deafening Sound’, Annie Flanagan draws from personal experience and from the testimonies of other women to confront our rape culture. It is in the strong, difficult portraits, the up-close look at injuries and the photographed documents that force us to look at this problem from many directions. Her photographs are direct and jarring, pulling us into the nightmares of these women’s lives, yet they are also tender and affecting, and at times even lyrical.
Going back and forth between black and white and color, between quiet contemplation and obvious pain, Annie Flanagan allows us to get close to these women so that we cannot turn away. She has been documenting this subject for some time now, making strong choices with her photography that pull this body of work together as it continues to tell a story that cannot be denied or ignored.
