Michael P. Smith Fund For Documentary Photography 2014 Finalist Liz Moskowitz Chapel

“East Austin is only East Austin for its history, and churches tell its story.” Associate Minister Floyd Baker Jr.

Project Summary: Small, white wooden chapels are scattered throughout the east side of Austin, a low-income area that is undergoing major changes to its infrastructure and population. While some of these humble structures are familiar with the sight of empty pews during Sunday service, others maintain a strong following despite gentrification. Devoted congregation members may no longer live in the neighborhood, but they often have strong ties to its past. Churches are a focal point of East Austin’s history, and it is essential to document the churches and their congregations as they are now. The rapidly changing physical and cultural landscape of the area makes it likely that the opportunity to do so in the future will no longer exist.

Congratulations to all of the Finalists in the 2014 Michael P. Smith Fund For Documentary Photography
