Michael P. Smith Fund For Documentary Photography 2014 Finalist Dominic Bracco II My Republic

Project Summary: My Republic is a series of personal reflections on South Texas constructed by two narratives - one personal - the other returning as a journalist - that often intersect.

The title My Republic comes from a revolutionary uprising known as La Republica Del Rio Grande that lasted one year, yet the conflicting ideas of race, nationalism and patriotism remain in the region.

My Republic feels more like a chaotic journal than a narrative. This is the beginning of understanding the place that I call home. It’s my story. My family’s history. But it’s also the perspective of someone looking at their home critically. The images of my life are unique, faded, and fleeting like the memories they represent and build the structure for the work.

Congratulations to all of the Finalists in the 2014 Michael P. Smith Fund For Documentary Photography
