Michael P. Smith Fund For Documentary Photography 2011 Finalist Charles Martin Perique

Project Summary: To optimally photograph all aspects of Perique, Mr. Martin currently employs digital cameras, both full-frame and otherwise. Their editing latitude allows him to work even in the darkest tobacco barns, and digital sensors handle the intense heat and humidity.

Tobacco: Perique aims at celebrating the art of a living heritage. Once the pride of the Parishes along the Mississippi, younger generations have no desire to carry on their father's and grandfather's craft-Perique-in the traditional, manual sense. Consequently, without taking proper steps, the details of the Perique life will soon become as vague as its beginnings. Upon completion, Tobacco: Perique will be the only comprehensive photographic study of this unique industry and it's people.

Congratulations to all of the Finalists in the 2011 Michael P. Smith Fund For Documentary Photography
