FROM THE DIRECTOR
This month, we’re excited to explore how the medium of photography has expanded and how we interact with photographic images in the current day. Our fall exhibition features six contemporary artists from New Orleans who use photographs as key elements in their work but use alternative display methods such as video, audio, and sculptural elements. Come get inspired by the exhibition then join us for a workshop to learn how to build a simple but beautiful lightbox to broaden the way you display your own work. If you already incorporate photography into expanded formats we want see it! Send us images; we might share your work on social media.
We’re also challenging our NOPA members to submit your best work for the annual CURRENTS 2016 exhibition, showcasing contemporary photographic work. The exhibition opens during PhotoNOLA at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, running December 8 through January 29, 2017. We’re proud to announce the exhibition will be juried by Kevin Miller of the Southeast Museum of Photography.
Finally, thank you to all the photographers who volunteered to support the mission of the Second Harvest Food Bank as they provide aid to the victims of the flooding. We were so touched by the generosity of our community and willingness to share your talent and equipment to document this disaster and relief efforts. We remain committed to helping as we can, so if you were impacted by the disaster and need assistance please let us know.

Maximize Window: The Expanded Photograph in Contemporary Art of New OrleansNOPA Gallery, 1111 Saint Mary St., NOLATodd Rennie, NOPA Programming Chair, has curated a thought-provoking exhibition focusing on photography in expanded formats; bringing together contemporary sculpture, installation and video from New Orleans that has roots in, or ties to, the straight photograph. This group show will feature the work of Sophie T. Lvoff, Colin Roberson, Brittan Rosendahl, Jonathan Traviesa and Bob Weisz. Juror Steven Albahari, Publisher of 21st Editions, selected ten finalists from 104 submissions for their exemplary use of photography as a means of creative expression. Lo-fi Pleasure: Celebrating George Kucher

In partnership with Shotgun Cinema, NOPA is opening our doors for a film series focusing on the intersections between film and photography. This month, Shotgun brings work by George Kucher, a campy low-budget filmmaker who heavily influenced the works of emerging directors John Waters and David Lynch in the 1960s.

This workshop with photographer and installation artist Linka A Odom will explore photo-based installation artists and photographers who stretch the boundaries of the traditional frame. Participants are encouraged to arrive early to explore the exhibition then watch a presentation on Odom’s work as well as other photographers who work with multi-media materials. Participants will learn how to build a simple, beautiful light box using affordable and easy-to-find materials. Everyone leaves with a finished light box of their own making! Register online
Odom has been commissioned to create her magic light box installations in 6 countries and more than 20 music & art festivals. She was awarded a Getty Images Creative Grant in 2012 for her unique installations utilizing photographic light boxes.
Portfolio Share Happy Hour with Zack Smith

We’re taking our portfolio sharing events in a different direction this month. NOPA member and professional photographer Zack Smith will host this event for photographers wishing to take their work to the next level. Participants will present a body of work and Zack will address specific questions and concerns then lead the group in discussion of the work. This Happy Hour is intended for emerging professionals and experienced amateurs to get open and honest feedback from an Alliance Member with many years in the fine art, commercial, and photography education business.

The Olaju Art Group presents photographs by Juliana Kasumu. This portraiture series reflects on the sensationalism of head wraps worn by women of color in past and present societies. By tracing the history of this notorious fashion statement, Kasumu presents unique perspectives into the linkages between Creole women of color in New Orleans and signares in Senegal.

Show some love to Baton Rouge and head up the river to see this group exhibition featuring the photography of Mary Ann Caffery, Paulo Steven Diniz, Kevin Duffy, William Greiner, Dede Lusk, David Humphreys, Amy James, Eleanor Owen Kerr, A.J. Meek, Katherine Scherer, Jim Zietz, and Reni Zietz. Also at LASM, running concurrently, is the exhibit “Lovely as a Tree” including photography by Beth Moon.
