2nd Tuesdays at NOPA: Richard McCabe Presents LAND STAR
Tuesday, February 7, 2017, 6:30-8:00 pm
NOPA Gallery, 1111 St. Mary Street, New Orleans
Please join us for an evening with Richard McCabe, Curator of Photography at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. McCabe will present his own work from the LAND STAR series of photographs and discuss his process and use of instant film to make photographs.
McCabe says of the series, “These photographs represent a perfect world of saturated color that that exists within a parallel universe, far from the complicated, hyper-digitized, and gentrified world of today. For the past three years, I have photographed almost exclusively with a 1960s era Polaroid land camera. The LAND STAR photographs were made over the past two years and are a contiunialization of my fascination with Americana, color, vanishing sites, and instant film photography.
LAND STAR reflects my interest in how car culture and the road have shaped the American dream and mythology. I am interested in using the camera as a tool for preservation – documenting objects and things before they disappear. These photographs were influenced by the work of photographers: Eugène Atget, Berenice Abbott, Walker Evans, William Eggleston, William Christenberry, Jeff Burrows, and Jim Dow.
