A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Greetings! What an honor to be the first Executive Director of the New Orleans Photo Alliance and our annual photography festival, PhotoNOLA. As the first Executive Director, and the first full-time staff member, the opportunities for growth feel limitless and I’m eager to roll up my sleeves and get down to business. My challenge, however, will be to identify the best opportunities and to create a path we can follow together. I’m spending the majority of my time this month listening and learning to you: our members, photographers, volunteers, funders, and community partners. I’m excited to announce a few new programs that have developed out of those conversations, but a larger strategic plan is in the works and will guide our growth going forward.
The core value of the New Orleans Photo Alliance will not change: community. We are a community of photographers and people who love photography. Building, supporting, and strengthening that community is, and will remain, the heart of who we are. I am honored to be welcomed into this community so warmly and assure you that I will work tirelessly as your advocate. Please join me on April 12 at 6:30pm for a special 2nd Tuesday at NOPA program. I will be hosting an open forum to talk about the future of the Photo Alliance to listen to your thoughts on programming, exhibitions, member benefits, and more. NOPA is proud to be the first venue to present Mile O’ Mud in conjunction with the release of the artists first monograph, Mile O’ Mud: The Culture of Swamp Buggy Racing published by powerHouse Books. Churning the buttery muddy water at the Florida Sports Park, swamp buggy races keep Florida’s frontier heritage alive. With Mile O’ Mud, 4th generation native Floridian Lightner shows us his home’s beauty; scarred and raw, surrounded by lush blue sky and restorative greens and we witness a community unapologetically celebrating their colorful and unique history. GRANT GUIDELINES
Established by NOPA to honor the legendary New Orleans photographer Michael P. Smith, this fund awards one $5,000 grant annually to a Gulf Coast photographer whose work combines artistic excellence and a sustained commitment to a long-term cultural documentary project.Both emerging and established photographers residing in the Gulf Coast states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida are eligible to apply. The subject matter for the proposed project, however, is not limited to the Gulf Coast region.

TAXI DANCE is a selection of silver gelatin prints and audio recordings from 2 years of nocturnal discoveries in the French Quarter. Join photographer Colin Roberson in a private, NOPA members-only exhibition walk-through. The program is open to all current NOPA members on a first-come, first-served basis. Advanced registration is required; your membership status will be confirmed and a registration confirmation will be emailed within 24 hours. We are capping registration at 25, but will add an additional walk-through if needed.

The Americana Music Triangle is home to music’s greatest story: nine original genres of music born in one tiny, mystical slice of the globe. This juried group photography exhibition will illustrate the stories and songs, legends and landmarks, struggles and triumphs that created the country’s most powerful cultural export: our music.
PhotoNOLA Collectors Club Print
NOPA presents “Desert Suitcase” by Aline Smithson as our2015 Collectors Club Print. The edition is a museum quality archival pigment print featuring an 8″×8″ image size on 12″×10″ hot press, cotton rag paper, signed & numbered by the artist. Limited to 100 prints (plus five artists proofs), all proceeds support PhotoNOLA programming. The PhotoNOLA Collectors Club series is a fundraising initiative to encourage collecting. PURCHASE NOW
Starting in May, the New Orleans Photo Alliance will create a comprehensive hub for all photography-based events in the New Orleans area. We are developing a new online resource to compile–in one easy to access location–listings of all photography exhibitions, openings, lectures, panel discussions, and other photography-based events. We will continue to spotlight notable events here in the newsletter, so be sure to provide a detailed description of your event for spotlight consideration.

The Ogden Museum’s Curator of Photography Richard McCabe will conduct a gallery talk of the exhibition, which includes photographs from the American Civil War, early 20th century stereo photographs of New Orleans, Pictorialism, Surrealism and Depression era documentary photography. Photographers featured in the exhibition include Alexander Gardner, George Bernard, E.J. Bellocq, Walker Evans, Eudora Welty, Arthur Rothstein, Ben Shahn, Marion Post Wolcott and Clarence John Laughlin.

Brittan Rosendahl is a Nebraska native and graduate of the University of Nebraska in Lincoln attending graduate school at Tulane University. He regularly investigates found and appropriated imagery, as well as remix, and media circulation. He considers himself a conceptual artist stirred to action by photographic imagery or condition.

Foreign Matter: A Narrative Account is a representation of images made while I was living abroad in Frankfurt Germany. Culled from a series of images (Feeling/Being Foreign) that are sequenced and titled, the installation is meant to be a reactivation of the images within a present time and space.
