The New Orleans Photo Alliance, in collaboration with the ASMP, is pleased to present Mary Virginia Swanson’s FINDING YOUR AUDIENCE: A GUIDE TO MARKETING YOUR CREATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY at the Contemporary Arts Center (CAC) on May 6, 2008, 7:00-9:00 p.m.
This lecture will provide artists with a road map to getting their work in front of those with whom they most wish to share it. Doing one’s homework towards the contemporary art market, engaging in a dialogue with peers as well as one’s industry, and getting your work out are at the core of this presentation. The value of entering juried competitions and maximizing one’s investment in attending art fairs and portfolio review events will be discussed as well as effective promotional materials to keep in touch with those on your mailing list. Lastly, the benefits of a multimedia presence today will be discussed, within a broader discussion about new markets for photographers.
Ms. Swanson is widely respected for her practical and inspirational presentations. Ms. Swanson has made it her goal to help guide photographers towards the strengths in their work and to identify appreciative audiences for their prints, exhibitions, editorial and licensing placement. She has a diverse professional background having coordinated educational, publication, and exhibition programs for a wide range of institutions and businesses in the photographic field.
Ms. Swanson is considered an expert in the area of marketing and licensing fine art. It was during her tenure heading special projects at Magnum Photos that she recognized the opportunities for artists to develop secondary markets for their work and in 1991 she founded SWANSTOCK, an innovative agency that managed licensing rights for fine art photographers. She currently works with photographers as a marketing consultant and is a much sought-after portfolio reviewer at events such as Review Santa Fe and Foto Fest, among many others. Ms. Swanson maintains a popular blog about marketing photographs at: marketingphotos.wordpress.com.
“In the last ten years, no single person in America has done more to support the cause of aspiring fine art photographers than Mary Virginia. She has played a pivotal role in their lives and careers.
