Just a friendly reminder that this Saturday, Dec. 1st, is Skip Bolen’s Opening Reception of his latest work in the group photography show at the Stella Jones Gallery in New Orleans.

Freedom of Expression, a group photography exhibit of works by Skip Bolen, William Anderson Jr., and Eric Paul Julien in conjunction with the photography exhibit Balance of Grays: The Bloc Gets Even by Ellis L. Marsalis III. The exhibition opens Saturday, December 1st at the Stella Jones Gallery in New Orleans.
Skip Bolen is primarily known for his jazz photography, however he is also known for his nostalgic take on the depth, emotions and richness of historic architectural imagery, of classic vintage signs, landmarks and notable scenes in New York, Hollywood and his hometown of New Orleans. Other works include documenting the disappearing historic landscape of water towers, telephone poles, and architecture taken primarily at night and early evening with available light. Stella Jones Gallery will exhibit a selection from this body of Skip Bolen’s work: eight large color polaroids of New Orleans cemeteries entitled “The Calm Before The Storm” and a selection of large black and white photographs of notable architecture and vintage signs.
The large 16 x 20 inch color polaroids of various New Orleans tombs and mausoleums with a wall of dark ominous clouds of a threatening storm approaching appear as color infrared-like images in intense rich blues and ivory colors. The resulting pieces are both boldly aggressive and seductively subtle. The large 32 x 45 inch (40 x 60 inch framed) black and white photograph of the first Buds Broiler opened in 1952 on City Park Avenue in New Orleans still standing and untouched by Katrina appears the same today as it did 55 years ago. The photograph is a strikingly bold example taken from Skip Bolen’s black and white architectural series.
