“In the Spirit: The Achievement and Legacy of Michael P. Smith”

by Jeff L. Rosenheim, curator of photographs,
The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Wednesday, July 29, 2009 • 6:30 p.m.
Counting House • 533 Royal Street

The illustrated presentation will discuss the importance of Michael P. Smith’s work as a documentarian of culture and why his excellence as a photographer is instrumental in that regard.

While living in New Orleans in the early 1980s, Jeff L. Rosenheim worked closely with Smith on the logistics of the “Spirit World” international tour, printing Smith’s negatives in his darkroom and managing his photograph booth at Jazz Fest. Considered the leading authority of Walker Evans, he has authored or co-authored eight books on the artist, including Walker Evans and the Picture Postcard (New York: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2009).

This event is presented in conjunction with the exhibition In the Spirit: The Photography of Michael P. Smith, which will be available for extended viewing before and after the lecture at The Collection, 533 Royal Street.
