Slideluck Potshow New Orleans II – call for submissions – DEADLINE MONDAY

  • by

Submit your work to SLPS New Orleans II! It will be a kickoff event for PhotoNOLA, New Orleans’ annual festival of photography. Slideluck Potshow provides a venue for photojournalists, painters, fashion and fine-art photographers to present work alongside one another in a relaxed and spirited atmosphere. This slideshow will feature emerging and established photographers and artists. We are currently seeking cohesive, creative, and thought-provoking submissions.

Deadline: Monday, November 22nd, 2010 – midnight — Please see the SLPS NO II submission page for more info and submission guidelines.

The theme for this slideshow is community. SLPS New Orleans Director, Andrea Caldwell, and Andy Levin, creator and curator of 100Eyes, an online photographic showcase featuring contemporary photography including documentary, art, and alternative photojournalism will be curating the show.

Community“: so chosen for its breadth of interpretation and relevance to our daily lives, or rather, the art of daily living.

We not only want to see communities, from the quotidian existence of a termite colony to the front row faces of the fashion world, we want to see work that ponders the idea of community. What comprises it? How is it maintained? Sustained? Preserved? How does it, or can it, grow? Deteriorate?

Those questions leads one to think about cause and effect… Communities are made up of individuals that exist in a physical world – How does an individual effect a community? It is true that one can’t give someone or something more than they have – so how does preservation of the self relate to the whole? Or preservation of nature? Or how does nature, in general, effect a community? Of course, your submission needs not be comprehensive or representative of community; at the least, a grazing.

Only the first half of the slideshow will consist of themed work; the second half will include any and all types. Presentations are a maximum of 5 minutes each, but most are much shorter, and we recommend between 15-40 images. Work is accepted in digital format only. We encourage all types of media that can be presented within this framework, be it painting, sculpture, or installation art. However, they must be comprised mainly of still images – no film or video will be considered, although multimedia pieces using video as punctuation can be submitted. When presenting photographs, there are many ways to go about it. One should not be afraid of making thoughtful observations, creating narratives, combining live music, speaking, or even performing with images. We want to see good work, but it need not be safe. Show us work in progress, outtakes from a job or if that makes you uneasy, show us your absolute finest work, because we like that, too.

Slideluck Potshow is a non-profit arts organization that provides an opportunity for artists and arts-appreciators to gather around food, friends, and artwork. The evening begins with a couple hours of mingling and dining on the home-cooked delights of those who attend (as it’s a potluck), then the lights are dimmed, the crowd is hushed, and a spectacular uniquely curated slideshow commences.

PhotoNOLA is an annual celebration of photography in New Orleans, coordinated by the New Orleans Photo Alliance in partnership with galleries, museums and photographers citywide. December 2010 marks the fifth annual festival. Scheduled events will take place from Dec 2-11, with broad ranging photography exhibitions on display throughout the month.
